For the month of August, Practice is excited to present Visible Scene, an evolving showcase of artists' publications, a reading area, and exhibitions focused on exploring notions of visibility and social phenomena at play within the field of artist self-publishing. Short-run shows of works in non-book media will allow viewers to contextualize publishing within contemporary artistic practices. Independent publishers and organizers of international art book fairs in New York, Brooklyn, Paris, and Dubai have been invited to present a curated selection of zines and books made by artists from those regions. A series of original texts and interviews with artists, publishers, and book fair organizers will be compiled in a companion zine published for the program. Visible Scene will highlight how artists who self-publish books and zines allow their work to enter circulation and to make visible what is often overlooked, ignored, or intentionally obscured or erased. In light of the rapid expansion of self-publishing over the past decade, Visible Scene will also focus on social phenomena emerging from the globalized art book scene, wherein many artist self-publishers have fostered local and global communities linked by common goals related to ideas of self-organization and collaboration.
